A continuing education company focused on collective and purposeful athleticism throughout motherhood.

Who We Are

Dr. Rachel Selman PT, DPT, CSCS, CPSS

Rachel completed her bachelors degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology in chemistry, then completed her doctorate degree in physical therapy at Mercer University. She went on to obtain her certification as a strength and conditioning specialist as well as her certification as a performance and sport scientist both through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She completed her pelvic health training through Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehab Institute and is the author of the rehabilitation guidelines for pre and postnatal athletes recently published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy. She is the co-founder of Stirrups to Situps - a phone application to help new moms navigate healing and movement through the first 12 weeks postpartum. She is also the founder of Synthesis Physical Therapy - a 1:1 outpatient clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina.

She became passionate about pelvic health after having her first son and realizing that the landscape of care for women looking to stay active in pregnancy and return to activity postpartum was both limited and conflicting. She has been featured in Women’s Running Magazine, Women’s Health Magazine, and often participates in public speaking engagements focused on education for pelvic health. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, her 2 boys, running, watching football, and ensuring that motherhood and athleticism do not have to be mutually exclusive both for herself and for her patients.

Dr. Allie Ryan PT, DPT

Allie graduated from the University of Georgia with a dual degree in Athletic Training and Exercise and Sports Science. She worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Emmanuel College where she discovered her passion for rehabilitative care. Allie went on to receive her Doctorate of Physical Therapy with honors from Georgia State University. She has completed peripartum/postpartum and pelvic health training through Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehab Institute. Allie is the founder of PelviPower LLC located in Southern Pines, North Carolina. She offers 1:1 in-office, mobile, and virtual services in order to improve access to pelvic health services.

Allie’s devotion to pelvic health began after the birth of her two children. She struggled with pelvic floor dysfunction herself and discovered the lack of resources and information provided to the general public on a topic that is vital to health and wellness. She is a passionate advocate for breaking down stigmas surrounding pelvic health and empowering people to embrace their bodies throughout this transformative journey called life. As a mother of two, she has a deep understanding of the desire to stay active during pregnancy and postpartum. It is her mission to promote a positive pregnancy experience and pave the way for a smoother postpartum recovery.

What We Do

Athletic Motherhood Co. is a company focused on education for providers of all types hoping to improve the landscape of holistic and musculoskeletal care for pregnant and postpartum women. While we both are passionate about treating our clients, we also understand that change happens by educating others and wanted to improve the approach on all fronts. Despite knowing the benefits of safe movement in pregnancy and postpartum, only 14-23% of women achieve the recommended guidelines for exercise during this time. We’re here to change that by building care providers who can confidently and safely guide women in training through the delicate yet empowering season of motherhood.

What You’ll Get

This 2-day course will provide education on a variety of topics regarding pelvic floor anatomy and physiology, musculoskeletal health, physical therapy diagnosis, and safe treatment options for pregnancy and postpartum. Special focus will be geared towards education on encouraging safe activity during pregnancy as well as safe return to sport postpartum including return to running and diastasis recti. Topics will also include labor and delivery preparation, common terminology and associated activity modifications for various pregnancy and postpartum complications, musculoskeletal considerations for birth, education regarding postural changes and symptoms with nursing, and more! While this course was previously hosted as a one-day course, the majority of the feedback was that there was just too much good information for one day - so we expanded it to a full two-day program with more lab time, more detailed lectures, and hands-on opportunities.

This course is certified for physical therapy continuing education credits. Please contact us if you need a copy of the outline to submit for request via any other licensing board and we’re happy to send it over! If you are not a physical therapist, you can still likely obtain continuing education credits for this program. However, each licensing board has it’s own requirements - as such, we recommend reaching out to your individual licensing board to ensure that you can obtain hours by participating in this course.

Who You’ll Hear

We take our collaborations very seriously and know that providing the best care requires careful vetting of who we provide a platform to. While the majority of our course focuses on musculoskeletal health during and after pregnancy, you’ll also have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions to other experts including nutritionists, midwives, and doulas to understand how we can best support our clients on their journeys for whole-person care.
